Tatay Perying of Mt. Manabu

coffee cups, thermos and Tatay Perying - sweet common sight

This is the first time that I write something about someone.  I would like to dedicate a page of my blog to someone with whom I never even spent half day of my life with but touched my heart in a way no one else did. I want to talk about someone, neither an actor nor a politician but a real living hero – Tatay Perying!

Cipriano Miranda is widely known as Tatay Perying to mountaineering society. He is unmarried and he lost his one eye in a fracas in Metro Manila, thus he decided to stay in the mountain. He lives in a dilapidated nipa hut in Mt. Manabu; one of the mountains in Batangas. I just met him once, but I would like to meet him again, talk with him more, and hug him even.

For more than 15 years he lives his daily life brewing coffee for strangers and cleaning the mountain. The hospitality in his place is overflowing. His brewed coffee was the best I’ve tasted. And he is not getting paid for doing all those things.

I haven’t been to a lot of mountains, but I’ve been to a lot of places and never did I meet someone I admire and respect the way I admire and respect him. Tatay Perying is a living example of happiness and contentment.

To Tatay Perying,

I know you’ll never see this article, I know you don’t know me either. But I want you to know that you’re such an inspiration. Mt. Manabu trek will never be complete without you. In behalf of mountaineering society I would like to thank you for taking care of Mt. Manabu. We’ll see you July 10; we want to have a party with you. J

Tatay's naughty wall decor. Ask him what this is and he'll answer
"Sandata ko yan" (That's my weapon)
