Paguriran Island : A Huge Beautiful Piece of Rock

silent sanctuary
Stunning aquamarine water enclosed in a huge rock formation.
Shallow crystal clear sea water stretching a long way from the shore.
Accessible beautiful destination.

Located in the town of Bacon in the Province of Sorsogon (one of the provinces of Bicol Region) is an island named Paguriran which possesses the above mentioned descriptions. This island that silently sits in Barangay Sawanga is one of the jewels of Sorsogon.

When I first set my feet in the Paguriran Island Resort, I wasn’t impressed. Although the sands are white, the rocky shore was almost bare. It seemed that the salt water had  already given up covering the ocean floor. No way to enjoy a soothing bath. There were dried leaves and fallen twigs scattered far and wide. Dogs are roaming around looking for food.

The resort has several cottages being offered for Php300-Php400 per night, but I told the owner/caretaker that we will just camp out and all we need is a little piece of the shore where we can pitch our tents. They kindly showed us to where we can situate our “home” for the night and we agreed to pay Php100.00 (for four of us).

There were only two groups of tourists in the area, maybe because the summer is off the picture. Our group that kept a muffled conversation in the dark corner of the resort and another group occupying one of the close cottages of the resort. The presence of the other group is very evident as we can hear them belting out in their rented karaoke. They were the only source of noise in the secluded rural world by the beach.

The night passed so swiftly and the dawn came just of the same pace. The island did not give up on impressing me. That very day, we have yet discovered the unrivaled charm of the place. The beauty which I did not see the day before was revealed to me, in full sublimity.

Paguriran Island from the Resort
Not far from the resort is the “actual” Paguriran island. Well, I do not actually refer to it as an island since it is not a piece of sub-continental land, but a huge piece of rock surrounded by water. This jagged big rock is surrounding a shallow pool of aquamarine water that appears like a concealed lagoon in the vastness of the sea. You will find the lagoon inside the jagged rocks. Indeed an awesome spot! Very fascinating!

How to get to Paguriran Island

There are two ways to get to Paguriran Island

By Land. From Sorsogon City go to the Grand Terminal Station and ride a jeepney en route to Sawanga, Bacon. Tell the driver to drop you off at Paguriran Island. The trip took us almost two hours. From the highway where the driver will drop you, take a walk to the Paguriran Island Resort. Don’t worry, it won’t take more than 10 minutes of walking.

By Sea. If you are coming from Bacon District, take the 40 minutes boat ride to Barangay Buenavista and another 20 minutes boat ride from there to Paguriran.

Our stay in the resort served its purpose - while away the time. We were looking for the cheapest place to stay for the night before we head to Bulusan Volcano for our climb and Paguriran was the best place we found. I dunno what other words you can use for a Php50.00 per head rate to spend a night by the beach that offer a mystic rock formation aside from awesome and perfect!

  1. wah, bigla ko tuloy namiss toh...walking distance lang ang bahay ng friend na tinuluyan namin dito...

sana natry nyo tumalon sa kabilang side yun open sea nah..sarap...^_^

just want to share our experience...

  2. we actually included Paguriran in our itinerary when we went to Sorsogon/Albay because of a feature in Living Asia. We only went there on a day trip. The island can be reached during low tide by foot. Hope to return there one of these days.

    1. So you still see the island's magnificent lagoon? Yah, it would be great to go back. :)

      Thanks for dropping by.
